It’s been awhile

Hello fellow bloggers and avid readers,

I apologise for the lack of updates and new design work.

Sadly there has been no new work to publish.

On a more personal note, to catch you up on recent(ish) events, I have been working since February of this year at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne as a production manager. Currently I am working exclusively with National Australia Bank. The experience has been quite illuminating to say the least and I have learnt a multitude! I couldn’t be happier working with Clemenger, especially since I have been following their work for quite some years.

However, working in production is a two edged sword, working closely with engaging design and not being able to contribute artistically. On the other hand I am glad to be part of the process and using my skills to ensure the job gets done.

Who knows, maybe one day I will be living the dream and finally be a graphic designer or even more. I couldn’t have my foot in a better door.

I will endeavor to bring you more design or even fine art in the near future when I find inspiration and time.

Here is a poster i entered for a competition for AGDA

Rationale:

There is a possibility that the future of design will be bleak. Those doubts of the future are current within us. Design of the future is in the hands of the design student. Can designers of today trust the young? This poster shows optimism for the future, even though there is doubt. With trust in students of design, these doubts can become positive. If the designers and studios of today invest, support, encourage and teach good design practices to the future designers, there will be hope that design will flourish and improve.

The typography used in this poster is Gotham, created in 2000 by Hoefler & Feres-Jones. With the notion of trust and stability in mind, a typeface that referenced architecture, signage and these values featured in the design were needed. Gotham was an obvious choice for the design as it does show stability and structure but is very clean and refined. Gotham was created to reference the type of architectural signage, which gained popularity in the mid twentieth century. This simplified poster design also references the New Typography movement.

In such a bleak period of pirated design, in the age of the ugly, we need trust in the future.

Quay Central Way Finding

Here is a recent project I just completed for a new way finding system for New Quay’s Quay Central.

This way finding system is situated in the Docklands, Melbourne.

The logo was provided for me and this way finding system was themed around it.

Here is a project I completed for my course for a cafe mural. There are three options and each illustration is based on a pictorial puzzle you need to work out. Can you work them out?

Name all the animals hidden in the tree

It’s a rebus puzzle! Try to figure out the saying

Each naughty bandicoot takes away a letter from this word at one time. Try to work out which letter is taken out each time and what new true word is made. Eventually one letter will be left.

Neu Gallery Packaging

Here is a continuation of the Neu Gallery brand identity. These are pictures of a jewelry box i made for the brand.
The inspiration behind this was an australian hand made theme. I used the shape of an echidna for the shape of the box and then used a corrugated card so it is reminiscent of a tin roof in the aussie outback. You may not see it but that is the point of lateral thinking!

Irk Worthy Design

Yesterday I opened my mail, to my delight, to find my new full license!
Quite an exciting event for me, since I’ve waited for my license ever since
I paid for my renewal.

On close inspection to the new updated design, to my horror, I saw what every designer fears most.
The dissolve filter. Yes, the dissolve filter around my photo…

The design capital of Australia and we’re using filters on our identification documents.
It’s seriously an outrage. I feel nausea.

I understand it’s all about protecting identity and making it hard to recreate, I know my little rant makes no sense.
But at least everyone will know that I’ll always feel a little queasy holding my license in my purse.

My usual ranting doesn’t just stop at driver’s licenses. Just for future reference, if you ever wanted to know. If i could go back in time and change anything, it would be to eradicate the typeface Comic Sans and Papyrus

Neu Gallery is a brief for a jewlry studio similar to eg etal, showcasing local artists from
Australia. With this work I focused on a more hands on style with handwritten typography.
I quite enjoyed this feminine approach. This is my own typeface.

Runway Revolution

For this brief we were to create an invitation and poster for the upcoming fashion parade.
The work is very strong and vibrant, reminiscent of a russian propaganda poster.
